Well, we just survived a rather mild winter, no more than a dusting of snow, and a night of tornadoes that wasn't mild at all.
On March 2, 2012 Murphy was hit by a series of tornado touchdowns (at least 4) which left in their wake numerous broken and uprooted trees, damaged roofs and a few flattened structures. BUT, there was no loss of life and no serious injuries.
For a while, Wal-Mart was the only super market open. When Ingles reopened after being closed for more than 2 weeks, the local turnout was impressive.
The tornado that roared up Rte 294 came at night so we couldn't see it coming and we didn't realize how close it was until the morning revealed a path of broken trees just outside our gate. One of the old houses on the farm below us was now just a pile of boards and trees in our own community were uprooted. The people who have lived in Murphy a long time say that there hasn't been a storm like this since the 1970's. So we do get rambunctious weather, but not too often.
Necessary repairs have been made to the road which was cracked in many places and showed crumbling at the edge, probably due to construction trucks. A new budget has been prepared and will be found under "Budget". Try and make the annual meeting at Brothers Restaurant, June 30,2012 at 5 p.m. Stick around for the food, it's good!
